Navigating the Obstacles Introduction
Emphasis on the Majority…
It took me a long time to come up with a fitting title for this particular series of blog posts. I have been wanting to write about personalities for a while, but wasn’t sure how to go about it. I finally decided to simply share what life is like for an introvert in a society in which the majority are extroverts.
In preparing to write this, I scoured the internet for synonyms and antonyms for one word. Hermit. It is a word that best describes the private life of an introvert. In looking for similar words for this noun, I clicked on countless online dictionaries and thesauruses. And I was given one startling result of my word search. “Sorry, the word you are searching for does not exist. Perhaps you meant…” Only one website knew what hermit meant, much less acknowledged it was a word!
I shouldn’t be surprised. In a society that values extroversion, it is little wonder that websites would be lacking in words on the opposite spectrum. While our culture isn’t the only one that encourages extroversion, it is hardly a universal preference. Many other countries value introversion and therefore have a higher population of that personality compared to extroverts. Having been in Korea for a year, I can personally attest that introverts were the majority, as are most Asian countries. I very much enjoyed my time there among that cultural atmosphere.
Struggle of the Minority…
But here in the States, how does an introvert not only survive but thrive in an extroverted world? These next couple posts will address that as well as go into a bit more detail on the introvert personality.
